Within the first teaching lesson with a class, students will fall into one of two categories. The first, is a 'new group', those who don't know each other and an 'existing group', those who are familiar with each other and the TFL. During the first class, common practice is to ignore the course book but instead develop rapport with students, establish goals and objectives for learning English and gain an understanding of each students ability. Occasionally, a class will consist of students and various spectrums of English. In this case, pair work between stronger and weaker students is advisable however, still needs to be controlled to ensure all students achieve and learn equally. Large class sizes and students using native language can also cause difficulties. For larger classes, group work, pair work, choral repetition and assigning group leaders can greatly assist the teacher. It can also be common for students to use their native tongue if they're nervous or frustrated when they can't convey meaning in English. It's recommended not to encourage this and rather promote only the use of English in class. Always ensure activities are appropriate to students skill levels and provide clear instructions for students to follow and begin tasks.
