The unit introduces various types of POS (Part of Speech) - noun, pronoun, verb (to-infinitive & gerund which serves as noun in sentences), adjective, adverb, preposition, definite& Indefinite articles and conjunction. For native speaker, one may not be aware of the POS when constructing sentences. However, in my opinion, it is a very vital lesson for students who learn English as second language according to my own learning experience. Being a fresh-grad and English tutor in Hong Kong, I am always aware of the importance of POS as it is an important strategy in learning English, especially in writing and dealing with cloze passages. It helps improving writing skills by enriching sentences step-by-step. For example, students can write up basic sentence with S V O at the very beginning, and gradually adding adverb and adjective in describing the verb and nouns respectively. Cloze passage is commonly known as a difficult task for students in Hong Kong, identifying POS improves their ability in completing the task in an easier way. In the context of teaching students who learn English as second language, I think it is ineluctable that POS is definitely a topic which needs to be taught thoroughly and teachers should be reminded that all the time.
