In this unit, I learnt that different groups of students require different teaching styles and approaches. When teaching beginners, it is important to be visual, to be interactive, and to give clear and simple instructions. One on one teaching allows the teacher to tailor the curriculum exactly according to the needs of the student, but often suffers from an absence of group work and activities. Teaching children usually calls for lots of repetition, more frequent praise, creative and engaging activities, and patience above all else. On the other hand, business English teachers need to know exactly what their students? needs are. These teachers may need to learn about their students? jobs or industries and whether they prefer to focus on productive or receptive skills. As for monolingual and multilingual classrooms, teachers can focus on the cultural aspect of language teaching. Monolingual classrooms allow the teacher to easily identify topics that may be of interest to the students as they have a similar cultural background. Multicultural classrooms also allow for conversations where students can share about their own culture. Teachers, however, need to be careful not to use their students? native languages even if they know it.
