This unit covered the different kinds of groups one can teach within ESL. There are beginners, young and adult learners, monolingual or multilingual learners, individual learners, and business English learners. It is important that one adapts one's teaching style to each of these groups. For beginners, for example, one should keep one's language clear and slow, and speak only in English. If assignments are not understood, one should use visual material or demonstrate it. For young learners one must vary one's activities a lot so that students don't become bored, and one should be able to make fun of oneself. For adult learners one should also try to vary activities, and one should always make sure what it is that adult learners want to get out of the lesson/achieve by the end of the course, as they are highly motivated and have chosen the class themselves. Multilingual classes may make life easier for the ESL teacher as English will most probably be the only common language, so English will probably be spoken more than in a monolingual classroom. For business English classes ESL teachers do not necessarily need any business experience - on the contrary - it helps when business learners have to explain their profession to the teacher in English.
