Unit 1 focuses on the qualities, roles and responsibilities of both teachers and language learners. It lists the characteristics of an effective teacher, and examines the nine different roles that a teacher will generally have, depending on the type of activity taking place in the classroom. Successful learners possess a number of qualities such as a willingness to ask questions. The success of language learners is also influenced by various factors such as age, culture, language level and motivation for learning. There are major differences between adult and young learners with respect to factors such as language awareness and behavior problems. Depending on their language ability, English language learners are often grouped into the six levels stated by the Common European Framework. The motivation for learning English varies between students; for example, to improve career prospects or for travel purposes. This unit has been useful in introducing me to the world of TEFL by emphasizing the important qualities and duties of both teachers and students. I learnt that a lively, knowledgeable, sensitive and encouraging teacher can expect to form a good rapport with his/her learners, and is more likely to motivate those students to achieve success.
