Unit 15 covers evaluation and testing of our students. The different ways to assess a student's language level are tutorials, evaluation by the students, using a questionnaire or by having a guided discussion, or by taking tests. There are five types of tests we can use to evaluate our students. They are Placement tests, or level test that use all four skills and are progressive, Diagnostic tests, which tells us about students strengths and weaknesses, Progress tests, also uses all four skills and is often required by the school or language center, Practice tests, which are used for revision purposes and to help practice for external exams, and finally Proficiency tests. Proficiency tests can be broken down into 3 types: General English, Business English, and Academic English. General English mainly has the Cambridge suite which is five levels of exams. The Business English has the TOEIC, the Cambridge BEC, and BULATS. The Academic English has the TOEFL and IELTS exams. There are many exams offered for various reasons and many students take multiple exams. Each exam is recognized by different countries, universities, and businesses. Students need to know which test they should take depending on how and where they want to use their English.
