Unit 1 presented examples of what constitutes a good teacher and learner, defined various roles the teacher plays, contrasted differences between adult and younger learners, and defined basic levels of competency among learners. On a personal level, while I have some experience teaching ESL classes, it is valuable to learn and think about levels of proficiency that I am not familiar teaching. With some teaching experience, it is also very valuable to consider all of the different roles of a teacher, and whether or not there are any roles that I have been neglecting to this point. A teacher should be aware not only of the level of the students he/she is currently teaching, but of all the levels of competency and their needs, as abrupt and drastic changes in position are far from uncommon. More specifically, in the 'What makes a good learner?' section, I appreciated the 'A desire to experiment with the language' point. I had never considered this before. Also, when contrasting adult and younger learners, I was curious about the idea that adults 'match' the new language with their current language, while it is generally easier for younger learners to learn from 'context and usage'. I hope to hear more about these ideas in future units or courses.
