Unit 16 discusses what teachers should teach as students progress through the various levels regarding the correct grammar for conditionals and reported speech. To this end, five conditionals forms and how they are used are illustrated to include (1) the zero conditional form if/when + present tense, present tense and its usage, i.e., referring to actions and facts that are irrefutable, (2) the first Conditional form ?if + present simple + will and its usage, e.g., a real situation in the future that is possible once the condition has been satisfied; (3) the second conditional form ?if + past simple (would, could, might + base form and its usage, e.g., communicates a present or future ?unreal? hypothetical situation that is presently not true, and not likely ever going to be true; (4) the third conditional form ?if + past perfect, would/could/might +have + past particle and its usage, and (5) the Mix Conditional where a second conditional clause is combined with a third conditional clause, e.g., if + If + past perfect, would + base form referring to a hypothetical past action or state and the hypothetical present consequence; Unit 16 also discusses how reported speech changes the tenses of direct speech that is being reported.
