A French lecturer that I had once commented on the difficulties of learning the English language and stated that more so than any other languages English (and the languages of many other Western countries) are very obsessed with the placement of ideas in time. At the time the class (myself included) thought this comment strange, however after examining the number of tenses that occur in English, the truth of this can hardly be denied. It may seem entirely unnecessary but there are a total of 4 tenses that can be described as \"present\" these are the simple, progressive, perfect and perfect continuous tenses. Maintaining a clear idea of the placement in time that each tense describes is indeed a very technical task. As three of these tenses use auxiliary verbs and one of them uses the past participle, the potential for student error is quite high, especially since many past participles needed to form the tense are irregular. It is a good idea to preface student grammatical errors with warnings against the most common of these errors that students are likely to perpetrate. Special exercises meant to activate the students' understanding of the tense should be employed soon after all grammatical points have been clarified to enhance student understanding.
