Unit 12 is about teaching productive skills (speaking and writing). Speaking activities can be generalized into three different types: controlled activities (accuracy based activities - drilling, prompting), guided activities (accuracy based but more creative and productive - model dialogues, guided role-play) and creative communication (fluency based activities - free role-play, communication games). I have learned about the differences between accuracy activities (usually part of the Study phase) and fluency activities (usually part of the Activate phase). Accuracy activities are concentrated on producing correct language and fluency activities are concentrated on allowing the students to experiment and be creative with the language. Both carry equal importance and both come into different stages of a lesson. Encouraging the students to speak is also important and there are several techniques that can be used to encourage interaction (changing classroom dynamics, pair-work, group-work). Written text has a number of differences which separates it from speaking (differences in grammar, vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, layout and punctuation). However, despite the differences many of the same factors as those for a speaking lesson should be considered.
