This unit provides an overview of how the words used in the English language can be categorized. Although there might be too many rules, the rules aren't always clear, and there are many exception to rules and categories, these characterizations facilitate greatly our ability to explain and learn the language because they provide a rationale for the variations in the spelling and usage of English words. This is especially useful among adult language learners because adults tend to absorb this type of information better when it's provided together with logic. Children on the other hand, having not yet fully developed logical thinking skills may benefit better from other teaching techniques.
