The past tense forms and sentence structures follow a similar pattern as the present tense forms, that is, past simple, past continuous, past perfect and past perfect continuous. Once again, the usage rules are the most important factor for considering which tense to can be used correctly. To construct the past tense sentence one must know and understand the auxiliary verbs (had, been) for past perfect and past perfect continuous, the -ing formation for continuous, past simple construction from the base form (and irregulars) and past participle construction for the past perfect. Assigning naming conventions and forming examples helps with the understanding of these verb and sentence forms.
