This unit covers the development process of course design, and extends from the first meeting through level testing and needs analysis to examine the types of syllabus to best use. Students' levels include elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, lower advanced, and advanced. Needs analysis is intended to give the teacher an idea of the students' previous learning experiences to help the teacher develop their syllabus, including the structural, the functional/notional, the learner-led and the situational syllabus. Testing is a way of judging the efficacy of the syllabus, and the types of test vary from diagnostic to placement to aptitude to achievement to proficiency and to progress.
