This unit is about troubleshooting and common problem situations. It discusses how the teacher can overcome the many obstacles that occur in the classroom. In the first lesson the teacher should not teach from the course book but instead focus on building a rapport with the students and making them feel comfortable and excited to be there. The more the teacher knows about his or her students, the more tailored and, therefore, more effective their lesson plans will be. There are many ways in which the teacher can break the ice during the first lesson. They can use games, questionnaires and surveys, and a pass the ball activity to get the students talking about themselves and their interests.
