Wow! This unit in itself gave me an education regarding the language I take so for granted and the effort of the people I see every day who use English as a second language. I can now consciously hear the rise and fall (and fall and rise) intonations of everyday speech. I appreciate the practical suggestions for how to illustrate and teach the complexities of pronunciation and phonology: patterns of intonation, gleaning meaning from statements through identifying stress points, and the four major ways words join together in English idiom. The phonemic alphabet blew my mind! Why have I never seen this when it's been in every dictionary I've used? Finally, Shaw's poem on page 12 is a keeper!
