This unit covers the receptive skills, reading and listening. Overall, students need a balance of receptive and productive skills. But students should start with receptive skills and then begin to produce as they are able. Receptive skills are also a great chance for students to see grammar and vocabulary in a useful or memorable context. There are many considerations when planning receptive skill focused classes. The list on page 2 was very useful. I have taught students about skimming and scanning before, but prediction, deduction, and reading for detailed information are also important. Seeing these ideas in a list form provides a resource that can be used in the future when planning classes.
