There are many different forms of conditional statements that change in meaning depending on the tense of verb used. These statements are used to describe consequences in the past, present or future that are dependent on a specific circumstance. Verb tenses must also be changed when direct speech is reported. Both the method of speech (asked, said, admitted, etc.) and the verb used in the direct statement may change form in reported speech. Words that describe time frame in the direct speech may also need to be adjusted since the reported speech is being said at a later time. Both of these concepts may be difficult for students to master since so many parts of the statement need to be adjusted and the changes in meaning may be subtle and hard to understand.
