Unit 20 presented ways for teachers to address the first lesson, as well as some solutions to common problems. I found the unit incredibly helpful because often getting started can be the hardest part of being a teacher. I was very nervous my first day, and after reading this unit I see some mistakes that I made. I did not take the appropriate amount of time to let students introduce themselves to me because they already knew each other. The first lesson is vital in setting the tone for the rest of course. I also learned that it is okay to begin class with a small game-like activity if it encourages their excitement to learn. Games do not have to be reserved for the end of class. This technique can be particularly useful on a Monday morning or on a dreary day.
