Unit 5 focused on classroom management. It made clear that one doesn?t have to be an extrovert to be an effective teacher. The best uses of eye contact, gesture and voice was discussed with regard to teaching effectively. Various options for grouping students during elements of classwork was covered, including whole-class grouping, pair-work and individual work. The advantages and disadvantages of four basic seating arrangements were explored. There were short sections about writing on the board and giving individual attention. Suggestions were then presented for how to balance teacher talk time and student talk time. Other subjects covered included giving instructions, establishing rapport with students, and maintaining discipline were also discussed.
