This unit focused on course books and materials. Authentic materials are what native speakers would normally read or hear in newspapers, songs, television, etc. They are useful because they're often more interesting to students, and students can gain confidence with the new language when they understand the authentic materials. The advantages of using a course book include that a book will often include a balance of vocabulary, grammar, and skills work, and it provides a syllabus at an appropriate level to the students. However, books can be expensive, outdated, or uninteresting to students. Therefore teachers should supplement course books with authentic materials and created materials such as crosswords, word search puzzles, gap fill activities, and role-play cards.
