Reading, listening, writing and speaking are basic skills in any language. the first two are called receptive skills and the other two receptive skills. All four are equally important and the teacher should incorporate all of them into a lesson. When we read or listen we don´t use only our ears and eyes, we also use our mind to grasp an overall meaning of the words from a pre-existing knowledge of the world. When it comes to learners of English (or any other language), reading presents fewer problems than listening because the text is captured on paper and students can read it as many times as necessary. This gives them the opportunity to think about it or deduce the difficult language form context. The more language we expose the students to the more they will learn.
