Looking at past tenses, we can follow many of the same rules we learned for the present tenses within the simple form, continuous form, perfect form, and perfect continuous form. The past simple is used primarily for actions completed at a specific point in the past. The past continuous is mainly for expressing actions that began before a point in time being discussed, and continue after it. The past perfect form is used mostly for viewing the past from a different past viewpoint. Finally, the past perfect continuous is generally used to talk about something that, as of the present time, had been going on for a long time.
