Assessing students is fundamental in teaching in order to evaluate their language level and progress. One effective example is by testing. It is important to use a variety of tests and to give them at various stages of their learning. Placement tests at the beginning enable teachers to place new students and group them in the correct class based on their language ability/level. Diagnostic tests are similar in that they aid in identifying what students already know and thus inform future lesson planning. Periodic progress tests are necessary to assess what areas need more attention. And last but not least, practice tests are useful in allowing students to prepare for external exams they may need to take for future study or work where English is the language of communication.
