Although some would simply the past tense as anything that happened in the past, there are many ways of speaking about the past. The past simple tense talks about the specific time something happened. The past continuous tense talks about something that began in the past and continues on to the present. The past perfect tense talks about something that was finished at a prior point in the past then the past moment being talked about. The past perfect continuous tense talks about something that occurred as an ongoing process between two points in the past, but does not refer to the present. These can easily be confusing for new English speakers, especially in light of the present and future tenses, and so much effort will need to be put into answering student's questions.
