A word's pronunciation is defined as a structured combination of a small set of elements. Usually. a word is learned after hearing only a handful of examples. Phonology concerns itself with the ways in which language make use of sounds to distinguish words from each other. It is important to understand accents and language variation in order to react appropriately to them and to teach appropriate language attitude about them to students. Phonetics and phonology provide systematic and well founded understandings of the sound patterns of english. The goal in this unit is to put language sound structure in context and to give a concrete sense of what the language sound systems are like.
