Tests are useful tool for any teacher to use in order to track the progress that is being made by his or her students, not only throughout the year but also prior to the start of the course itself. Prior to beginning it helps to have students take placement or diagnostic tests in order to see the skill levels of the students. Once the class has started periodical external examinations should be given to track how much information is being retained by the class so that the teacher can make adjustments as needed. Prior to these tests it is helpful to give out practice tests so that students know what they need to know for the external examination itself.
