Conditionals and reported speech can be a difficult topic to master. The zero conditional describes facts. The first conditional gives a specific condition/circumstance/event/action and communicates a consequence. The second conditional gives a hypothetical event and communicates a hypothetical consequence. The third conditional gives a hypothetical past event an gives a hypothetical past consequence. A mixed conditional gives a hypothetical past event and gives a hypothetical present consequence. When changing from direct speech to reported speech, verbs change as shown in the chart on page 6 of the lesson (there are exceptions to these general rules).
