During a first lesson, it is important to establish rapport with the class. There are several techniques that can be used to accomplish this such as a survey, the ?Tell us about? game, a pass the ball game, and a ?needs analysis?. Sometimes, a teacher finds himself among a class of students at varying levels of English proficiency. In such a case, he may want to break the class into different groups and use different materials for each group, prepare additional or more complex material for the more advanced students, or pair stronger students with weaker ones for activities. The use of native language should be minimized during class.
