A good teacher is more interested in students' learning than him or herself as teacher. By understanding learners' levels and adjusting to them there is a greater chance of success. The teacher needs to shift between roles as model, prompter, manager, and assessor -- sometimes presenting and explaining, then organizing activities and/or inviting students to practice, then prompting and assessing progress, then repeating the cycle. In repeating and adjusting the cycle the teacher needs to look for the gaps, to know when the students have genuinely learned the unit and are ready to move on, and when they need to re-learn or practice from a different angle.
