Zero conditional is used to talk about situations that are always or almost always true like scientific facts, general truths, or situations that are certain. First conditionals involve promises, threats or likely results of possible future situations. Second conditionals involve dreams or hypothetical situations. The first clause can be past simple or past continuous. The third conditional is the past result of an imaginary situation that occurred in the past. It involves regrets or excuses. Mixed conditionals are the present result of an imaginary situation in the past. In order to successfully use reported speech students should practice back shifting.
