Teach English in Zunyilu Jiedao - Guiyang Shi
This unit discussed the usage of course books and teaching materials. It identified different types of materials, namely pre-prepared published course books, authentic materials (not geared to ESL purposes) and created materials (geared to ESL purposes). The unit emphasized advantages and disadvantages of using course books, listed ways to make the best use of course books, and guidance on factors to consider if the teacher chooses the course books her/himself. Other than following the course book materials strictly for all lessons - which, it was emphasized, is not recommended - the unit identified four approaches to course book usage: omission of materials, replacement of materials, supplementing materials, and adapting materials. My main takeaway from this unit, especially following the lesson plan design test of the work sheet, is that a teacher has to find a balance between structure and spontaneity in lesson materials, and ensure that whatever is used to teach students is geared to their language levels, culture and, as much as possible, their interests.
