In any language, there are four basic skills; receptive skills including reading and listening, and productive skills including speaking and writing. Since they are basic skills in any language, all of them are equally important and they should be balanced in order to approach the language. In this chapter, they basically talk about the receptive skills which are reading and listening. When we read or listen to something, typically there are two main reasons; for a purpose or for entertainment. For any of those reasons, we have lots of way to read and listen, for instance, using predictive skills, scanning for specific information, skimming for getting a general idea, reading for detailed information, deducting from context. Numerous problems happen both in teaching and learning about reading and listening. For those potential problems, teachers could do pre-teaching vocabulary of any kinds of texts and activities. When they choose texts for class, teachers should be careful. Those should be interesting for majority of students including various types of topics.
