Teach English in YunguAn XiAng - Guiyang Shi
This unit looks at different ways of evaluating students' levels and progress as well as some of the common external exams a teacher may need to prepare students for. Ways of assessing a students's language level include tutorials, evaluation of the course by students and through testing. Testing can be done at different stages in the course. A placement test is used to place new students into the correct class according to language ability, often with a written and spoken component. Progress tests are used to gauge what language has been acquired and what has been forgotten and should include a balance of all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). Diagnostic tests are given at the beginning of a course to see what students already know. Practice test should follow the format and structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for. These include: TOEFL, IETS, TOEIC, and the Cambridge Assessments (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, ESOL, BEC, BULATS). Each of these external examinations focus on different contexts and skills.
