Teach English in Youzhajie Jiedao - Guiyang Shi
This unit dived into teaching pronunciation and phonology, two topics that are often neglected by teachers (since many do not understand it well enough). It started with an introduction to intonation (different volumes and pitches used in full sentences) and stress (differences in just single words). For intonation, teachers can use nonsense words, gestures, humming/singing, and the board to aid theirs explanation. For stress, teachers can use comparisons, gesture, choral work, the board and visual stress marks. For both of these, it is good to go over the general guidelines shown, but it is better to let students learn to naturally 'feel' the language for themselves in time. The unit then introduced the International Phonemic Alphabet (IPA) and stressed its importance. Then, the manner and place of articulation was discussed. Teachers can best teach this section by using peer dictation, their own mouth as an example, diagrams of mouths and tongue twisters. This unit as a whole can be taught throughout many lessons, as whole lessons, or whenever the need arises.
