This unit covered the different types of tests used in a class setting and the purpose of each one. It also covered some external tests, not affiliated with any school, and the purpose of those as well. The initial tests, placement or diagnostic, are used to test a learners knowledge of English at the moment and to see what areas they need to work on. It can be used to see what class they need. The progress tests are used to test the progress of the students and see what has been retained and the areas that still need work. The practice tests should follow the format of the external test that the student will be taking at the end of the course such as the TOEFL in America or the Cambridge Assessment in Europe. I believe it is important for the student's progress to be monitored by testing. It is important for the teacher to have this information when forming lesson plans. It is a way for the teacher to tailor make the lessons for the needs of the students. It is also a useful tool for the students. Students want to know how they are progressing in their studies.
