While the practical application of this unit depends heavily on the exact circumstance of the classroom (the students, their personalities, the school, the classroom, the culture, the materials available, etc.), I learned a few valuable takeaways. I learned that it is important to use simple, clear language when giving instructions to avoid confusion and allow the students to focus specifically on the content of the lesson itself. I learned how to use different groupings of students to produce different results: Do the students require more talk time? More independent reading time? More attention from the teacher? This unit also emphasizes strategies for keeping student attention: avoid addressing students in a particular order, use a student's name at the end of a question to keep all the students engaged, use gestures and visual aids, establish a relaxed, comfortable rapport with the class, etc. I also liked the strategy of allowing students with low self-esteem to answer a fairly easy question, helping them feel more self-confident and more comfortable.
