In addition to coursebooks, there are many different tools that can be used to make a lesson more interesting and fun. Most classrooms will have a whiteboard for teachers to write on. Interactive whiteboards are also becoming more popular but are still not standard due to the added expense. Depending on the layout of the classroom, overhead projectors can be very useful. They are helpful for certain types of lessons, and because they can be written in advance, they also decrease the time the teacher must have his or her back to the class while writing on the board. Visual aids are great for quick context and for teaching new vocabulary as compared to verbal explanations. Worksheets are especially helpful for reading and grammar exercises. CD's and DVD's build better listening comprehension skills while keeping the interest of students. English dictionaries with simple definitions are better than dictionaries in the student's native language, especially for more advanced students. The internet is an endless resource for teachers of ESL and students alike.
