In unit twelve, the various aspects of teaching productive skills - speaking and writing - were introduced. Here the reader was taught a wide variety of ways to prepare lesson plans for both speaking and writing. When speaking, it was highlighted that the atmosphere should be made comfortable and that students should be encouraged. The type of activities used and the extent of monitoring for various parts of lesson plans was also emphasized, such as the importance of plenty of controlled practice before fluency activities. In regards to writing, it was noted that there are a few distinct differences when writing as compared to speaking. One such important example is that writing allows for more time to think and write whereas speaking is on the spot. The most important thing I learned, to be noted about writing, is the vast differences in writing styles between different cultures. As such, it would be important to plan lessons accordingly. I also learned that games are an excellent way to practice writing and speaking, not just with children, but also with adults.
