Teach English in Touqiao Jiedao - Guiyang Shi
This lesson gave a real live demonstration of how a classroom can be managed and the interactions between a teacher and his students. The first video depicted a poor classroom management situation in which the teacher was hostile, did not explain anything, used jargon, did not learn students' names, and did not create a welcoming, safe atmosphere. Students responded by participating very little for fear of being reprimanded or insulted by the teacher. The students were not engaged and it seemed as if this did not matter to the teacher at all. In the second video the teacher was warm and friendly and engaged students first in a brainstorming of animal names to get people interested in the class. He used miming, gestures, changes in tone and inflection of his voice and moved around the room to generate interest. There was greater participation by students and the teacher responded by answering their questions or pitching questions to the rest of the class. The teacher also incorporated partner work to give students more talk time and make the lesson more interesting.
