Unit 2 discusses the many common areas of grammar which ESL teachers will most likely deal with in teaching. Some of these are: nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives comparatives and superlatives. The reading emphasizes that teachers need not be grammar experts, but if lacking grammar knowledge in these areas, teachers may lose credibility with their students. The reading first discusses subjects and verbs as essential components to sentence structure. It then adds the object and transitive verbs as to start looking at longer sentence forms (SVO)). The reading also addresses different noun forms (singular versus plural, countable versus uncountable), as well as differentiates these from proper nouns and personal pronouns. Rules for definite and indefinite articles in relation to nouns are also discussed (e.g. speaking in general versus speaking specifically, dealing with singular versus plural nouns. The reading then concludes by illustrating the relationship and rules between adjectives, comparatives and superlatives as well as the use of prepositions and conjunctions.
