In Unit 11 we looked at the two basic receptive skills in language learning which are reading and listening. Two major reasons for reading and listening come into play, for purpose or for entertainment, which we should consider when teaching as we can use them for motivating students to learn. Reading and listening is not at direct or simple as some may initially think. When we read or listen we are doing it with a plethora of background information and known or unknown context which impacts how we understand things. There are a variety of skills we use when reading and listening include making predictions, deductive reasoning, scanning for key words or specific information, skimming, and focusing on detailed information in the content we are trying to understand. The strength of these skills will impact how well or poorly we understand something. Therefor it's important to select a variety of topics to engage all students, pre-teach difficult vocabulary to build confidence and prepare students to understand the content, and select texts appropriate to the students.
