This unit teaches the most prevalent methods of teaching English with descriptions, pros, and cons. It also shows in more detail the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) technique, which combines some of the most effective features of the other teaching methods. Although I didn't know the names of the methods, I can tell after reading the material that I have experienced personally probably three or four of the methods listed. In particular, the PPP (Presentation, Practice, Production), Communicative, and Audio-lingualism methods seem familiar to me. I have also seen the ESA used in the classroom effectively. Using ESA, it seems to me, requires the teacher to be creative and always on the lookout for good ways to introduce new language and help students USE the language they learn. Although it is definitely more effective, it can actually be more difficult for the teacher than just reading from text book and giving writing assignments. Overall, I enjoyed this lesson, and felt that it included many helpful and practical ideas that I will be able to use in the future.
