This unit provided an introduction to phonology, and discussed how best to overcome the challenges in teaching pronunciation, which is an often neglected aspect of English language teaching. The unit described the nature and usages of intonation, stresses and sound joining patterns, and also included recommended techniques for teaching intonation and stress. After an introduction to the phonemic alphabet and how to read and use it in teaching, the unit proceeded to describe the manner in which sounds are formed, utilizing a mouth diagram to identify the places in the mouth utilized in sound production (such as the alveolar ridge and the velum), and also described the different manners in which these speech organs and mouth areas can be used to produce sounds. Teaching techniques for teaching the pronunciation of individual words were also listed, and the unit videos showed a useful demonstration in teaching pronunciation using almost all of the recommended techniques (including using your own mouth to demonstrate, gestures, tongue twisters, and the phonemic alphabet).
