Establishing a rapport with students early on is one of the most effective things a teacher can do to motivate and encourage student's participation throughout the entirety of the course. Smiling and getting to know students in the first week or so is so important because you can base some of the lessons or games upon what they like or what their hobbies consist of. The course book should not be used the first day of class. The first day of class should be trying to learn names, establishing a rapport, and assessing the level of English language of the entire class. A teacher should never force a student to participate. Instead, the teacher can encourage more pair-work or try role-play. It is important that a teacher comes to class with a positive attitude because the teacher controls and leads the environment of the class. Love what you do and you may be able to make a positive impact on the students lives ITTT has been a magnificent help in my confidence to become an English foreign teacher and I now feel ready to jump right in.
