Usually for first lessons, it would be a great opportunity to know the students by building rapport and knowing their English standards. Finding out their aspirations and needs are important. Warmers could be used to engage the students to be in the mood for English lesson. In a class of varying levels of learners, the teacher needs differentiated materials. The best possible work is to have a set of required worksheets. For those who are faster can be assigned worksheets under same topic at a higher level to continue to engage these group of learners. In order to cater to large class, strategies to be employed are possibly placing students in pair or groups, appoint leaders, choral repetitions and worksheets. In addition, teacher needs to have loud audible voice and give clear instructions. Depending what teacher is doing, it is possible to get brains to work. It would be useful to try meaningful methods to engage reluctant learners. There is a need to help those students with challenges in listening by playing the listening text a few times and possible slower speed.
