I have learnt about the receptive skills which are reading and listening. I have come to understand that in order to extract useful information and truly digest the context, I must have employ a number of specialist skills, for example, predictive skill. Quite often we found that we are running out of time to 'swallow' all the knowledge in order to pass the exam excellently. And it is time to scan through to get specific information as well as to skim to obtain a general idea of the context. However, this should be the last resort. Better still, we have to read or listen thoroughly to gain a better understanding of the context. Pre-teaching vocabulary is vital prior to commencing a reading or listening task. This can certainly help to build confidence as it helps to minimize the problems that are more likely to 'pop up' if the student find the task given is too tough. Exercises given is considered as an aiding material to analyse the understanding level of the students and therefore allows teacher to think of a better approach for more effective receptive skill lessons.
