This unit focuses vocabulary, grammar structure and language functions. Throughout the unit it highlights the ways to use the engage, study, activate techniques during lessons to teach each area. Highlighting the straight arrow as an appropriate way to teach vocabulary, patchwork for grammar and boomerang for language functions. Although it does say this is not a definitive rule, the teacher should pick and choose the appropriate plan. It details how to select the correct vocabulary, what specifically the students need to know about the vocabulary, and finalizes by suggesting techniques for teaching. The unit then goes onto talk about what you need to know when teaching grammar structures, the meaning, the use, the various forms, and any differences between spoken and written grammar. It then gives suggestions on how to structure a lesson based around the ESA framework.The unit finishes with language functions i.e inviting, refusing, agreeing etc. It highlights the importance of teaching when it is appropriate to use which language type, formal, informal, technical etc.
