Unit 19 explores various teaching scenarios the ESL teacher might encounter teaching various types of students. The unit talks about the varying levels of beginner and how their needs may differ. The unit also discusses business English and the growing needs that are surfacing. The unit in it's entirety is about coping with the challenges of these various skill levels and how to adapt as a teacher. I recently used a needs analysis as a homework assignment b/c I wanted to understand the expectations of the students who signed up for the class in comparison to the administration's idea of what the class should be. It was extremely validating to read this is an acceptable and encouraged practice, b/c shortly after class I had doubts about if I was putting to much responsibility in the students hands. I also recently taught 14 1st grade classes and wanted to change a few things b/c the lesson didn't seem appropriate and learning that it is ok to keep things brief and varied was also validating. The lesson, all in all was informative but a bit lengthy given the subject matter.
