Unit 5 was about class management; how to organise and manage the classroom, create a fun and positive learning environment and maintain discipline. I learned that as a teacher that eye contact, gesture and your voice are all tools that you use to create a rapport with students and you can convey different meanings to them. I also learned that grouping students in different ways during learning (group, pair, individual) each have pros and cons and an appropriate mix of each in the classroom can help students learn. I learned that different classroom arrangements are appropriate for different settings, and it is important as a teacher to avoid having your back to the class. There also needs to be a good balance between teacher talk time and student talk time, so that they can practice speaking, while also listening to English being spoken by a native speaker. Finally I learned that teachers need to be clear when giving instructions and they have to be firm with their discipline and ensure that they are prepared and are prepared to follow through with threats that they make.
