This unit overviews the parts of speech of the English language. Each of the parts of speech is explained, separated into categories, and delved into on a basic level. Main types of nouns, for instance, are common nouns (paper, desk, boy); proper nouns (Los Angeles, Asia, Atlanta); compound nouns (moonshine, backpack); abstract nouns (wisdom, contemplation); and collective nouns (crew, family). Other parts of speech include pronouns (words that take the place of nouns); adjectives (words that describe nouns); verbs (words of action and being); adverbs (words that add meaning to verbs); preposition (words of relationship); conjunctions (that join words and phrases); articles (definite or indefinite); and gerunds (\"-ing\" forms of verbs used as nouns). An understanding of the parts of speech is important for the teacher of the English language so that correct English usage can be taught to the students. A knowledge of basic rules of each part of speech can aid a student of the language to understand correct usage and enable him to become more fluent in the English language.
